Finding Your Mission

On a separate piece of paper, write down a list of fifteen things you want solved in the world.

Try to get very, very granular about this. You can’t say “world peace” or “world hunger.” We need to get more specific. For example, “I want to help solve the food desert in the Bronx,” or “I want to be able to help with homelessness in the East Village,” or “I want to help addicts on skid row.”

When you’re done writing your list, it’s time to figure out how the things that came together on your list of curiosities connect to your list of things you want solved.

I want you to study and research those intersections. Just by doing this exercise, you’re positioning yourself more profoundly in your own, powerful, creative, beautiful way of relating to your interests. You can begin to nurture your curiosities so much that they become your passion, and passion will inspire your purpose.

Your homework is to research your intersections for fifteen minutes every day for the next two weeks. Try not to share your lists or this process or your findings with anyone just yet. Only share after the two weeks are completed. When we share something vulnerable too soon, people who are not living their purpose may discourage us or tell us we’re wrong. Sometimes they can do this with body language alone. This might be your best friend or your parent or your lover. It’s unintentional. For people who are not living their purpose, you sharing about your purpose can be triggering, and their reactions may pivot you away from what you came here to do. Hold your cards close and protect what you care about, especially in the early stages.

After two weeks, you can start sharing with people if you feel moved to, because by then you’ll have enough experiential understanding of your findings; it won’t just be intellectual.

The beautiful thing is that once you realize that the things you’re curious about can fulfill you and help others, you understand that you’re not only helping yourself to be free, you’re helping everybody else to be free, too. Try to let go of the fear that you won’t be able to make a living. This is unknown, but the anxiety of it is enough to kill even the seed of a dream before it has time to grow. Believe you can make a sustainable living doing something fulfilling that you enjoy. This belief is part of the natural law of abundance you must tap into.
